From the second season you learn of these creatures. They appear mostly human except for their arms and hands which turn into a 3 digit claw. Their nails are poisonous. They worship the god Dionysus ( Aka Bacchus, aka the god of the vine). They are mischievous creatures who feed off of chaos and melancholy.
Mary Ann, a maenad, shows that she has the power to control people and cause chaos. She is to be married to the "horned god" and offerings must be made. The offerings range from sex to human sacrifices. Her human sacrifices must be that of supernatural origin. Shape shifters being preferred.
Maenads cannot be killed unless they are killed by the god they worship. It was hinted that they aren't actually not able to be killed. It was hinted at that they are too stubborn to die unless the god they worship kills them. His guise is usually something horned. An example of this is when Same Merlotte spears in the chest with his horn while in the shape of a massive bull. He then transforms back into a human and his holding her heart in his hand. Her dying words were, " Was there no god?"
They are said to be immortal living for thousands of years. But as you can see they can die but not by normal means.
Excerpt from Wikipedia based on the books:
"A maenad is a female follower of the Greek god Dionysus. A maenad's blood is corrosive to vampires. They also have their own sort of control on any creature through madness (only in the book) and demand tribute when wanted. They are divinely powerful, immortal and chaotic neutrals. When they rave they go on rampages and sometimes tear humans and animals to shreds. They can be cannibalistic at times. Maenads are considered rare "ancient creatures" of the supernatural commune"
